Rounding to the Nearest Thousand

Learn how to round big numbers to the nearest thousand with easy steps, examples, and practice exercises.

📖 What Does It Mean to Round?

Rounding means finding the closest number with a simpler value. When we round to the nearest thousand, we look at the hundreds digit to decide whether to round up or stay the same.

🎯 The Golden Rule:
Look at the hundreds digit (the third digit from the right).

• If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 → round down (keep the thousands digit the same).
• If it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 → round up (add 1 to the thousands digit).
4,000 ▲ 4,500 (midpoint) 5,000

If a number is less than 4,500, it rounds down to 4,000. If it is 4,500 or more, it rounds up to 5,000.

✏️ Worked Examples

Example 1

Round 3,482 to the nearest thousand.

  • Identify the thousands digit: 3 (in 3,482).
  • Look at the hundreds digit: 4.
  • Since 4 is less than 5, we round down.
  • Keep the thousands digit the same and change the rest to zeros.
✅ Answer: 3,000
Example 2

Round 6,751 to the nearest thousand.

  • Identify the thousands digit: 6 (in 6,751).
  • Look at the hundreds digit: 7.
  • Since 7 is 5 or more, we round up.
  • Add 1 to the thousands digit: 6 + 1 = 7.
✅ Answer: 7,000
Example 3

Round 12,500 to the nearest thousand.

  • Identify the thousands digit: 2 (in 12,500).
  • Look at the hundreds digit: 5.
  • Since 5 means «round up», we add 1 to the thousands digit: 2 + 1 = 3.
  • The ten-thousands digit stays the same (1).
✅ Answer: 13,000
Example 4

What is the value of 245,732 when rounded to the nearest thousand?

  • Identify the thousands digit: 5 (in 245,732).
  • Look at the hundreds digit: 7.
  • Since 7 is 5 or more, we round up.
  • Add 1 to the thousands digit: 5 + 1 = 6.
  • The digits to the left (2 and 4) stay the same, and the rest become zeros.
✅ Answer: 246,000
